Mediterranean bonsai

These are typical Mediterranean trees, they live better outside because they need both the sun and the cold to produce fruit. Most are grown in our fields in Tarragona, the most representatives are: olives, citrus and apple.

Characteristics

Tree with deciduous leaves, with a very fragrant flowering in spring. From November to February you can see the strong colour of its fruits.


Location

It accepts all kinds of climates but prefers a sunny situation during the whole year. In summer it’s recommended to protect against strong sun of noon and even though it resists frosts well, it’s better to protect against temperatures below –2ºC.


Watering

Abundant in summer and in moderation in winter. Take care not to wet the flowers.


Fertilization

In spring and autumn. Don’t fertilize during flowering and do when with fruit

Re-potting

Every 2 years, at the beginning of spring.

Cut off down to 2 leaves when the branches have about 6 to 8 leaves. Eliminate the strong vine shoots.

Wiring

Possible during the whole year but taking care in spring because of its fast growth the wire can leave marks everywhere.


Curiosities

It’s flower, his very fragrant during twilight, therefore the insects responsible for its pollination, are active in this moment of the day, which is a good example of symbiosis.
