Mediterranean bonsai

These are typical Mediterranean trees, they live better outside because they need both the sun and the cold to produce fruit. Most are grown in our fields in Tarragona, the most representatives are: olives, citrus and apple.

Fraxinus oxycarpa

Characteristics

Deciduous tree from 10 to 40 m high, with little branching and vigorous growth. Trunk generally very straight, with bark getting rough over time. Leaves composed of 9 to 13 serrated leaflets, smooth on the visible side and hairy on the underside.


Location

Outdoor, in full sun all year.


Watering

Abundant, especially in summer and given its location in full sun.


Fertilization

Spring, end of summer and autumn.

Re-potting

Every 2 to 3 years.

Substrate

Akadama 100%, or mixed with up to 30% of volcanic gravel.


Pruning and pinching

Pruning

In winter, when leafless, so we will better appreciate the branches that will need to be pruned.

Pinching

It should be done when two new leaves appear, by leaving one and cutting the other. It is advisable to observe where the bud we leave when pinching the leaf is, since it is the mark point for the growth of the new branch.

Wiring

Spring and fall. It is a tree with vigorous growth, so you have to watch that the wire does not sink into the branches.


Curiosities

Medicinal plant, used as a laxative in some places. Wood is used in the con-struction of rackets and skis.
