Etymology

Ancient Greek name, derived from «elaia», olive tree, and «agnos», sacred.

Characteristics

Evergreen shrub. Very appreciated for its fragrant white flowers and their small fruits, of red colour, and edible.


Location

In areas of Mediterranean climate, it can be placed outside, in full sun throughout the year. In colder areas, to be protected from frost.


Watering

Moderately.


Fertilization

Spring and fall.

Re-potting

Every 2 years, in spring.

Substrate

100% Akadama, or mixed with a 30-40% of volcanic gravel.

Before the spring sprouting.

Pinching

When new shoot has grown up to 6 leaves, cut down to 2 leaves.

Curiosities

The leaves of all eleagnus show peculiar characteristics: when they bloom, they are tomen-tose, this “hair” vanishes when ripening. The underside of the leaf is silvery, showing brown scales.
