Haha no Hi (母の日): Mother’s Day in Japan
Haha no Hi (母の日) is a very important celebration in Japan, where mothers are honoured and thanked for all they do. In this post, you will learn more about the history and traditions of this Japanese holiday.
The origin of Mother’s Day in Japan
Mother’s Day tradition in Japan dates back to the ancient Chinese custom of the Chrysanthemum Festival, which was celebrated in honour of mothers and originated during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). The holiday was adopted in Japan during the Meiji era (1868-1912).
Originally it was celebrated on March 6, on Empress Kojun’s birthday, but in 1949, the date was moved to the second Sunday of May to coincide with that of many other countries.
For believers of the Shinto religion, this day also honours “Amaterasu”, goddess of the sun and mother of the Japanese people.
In Japan, Haha no Hi is an opportunity to express gratitude and love to mothers for their sacrifice and care in raising children. It is traditional to give red carnations, which symbolize love and gratitude towards mothers, as well as greeting cards and other gifts. It is also common to visit the graves of deceased mothers, to whom white carnations are offered.
A bonsai can be a great gift for Mother’s Day, since the dedication and patience necessary to cultivate a bonsai reflect the special care mothers have for their children.
If, in addition, we opt for a bonsai in bloom, the gift is even more appropriate if possible, since the bright colours and sweet aromas of the flowers convey feelings of love and gratitude.
Why gifting a bonsai for Mother’s Day?
Bonsai are a very popular gift at Haha no Hi. Bonsai are miniature trees that are grown in pots. There are both indoor and outdoor bonsai. They are considered a very symbolic gift, since care is similar to that mothers provide their children: an essential and lasting task.
In addition, bonsai are a durable and customizable gift since they can last for many years and can be shaped over time to suit the tastes and preferences of the person who receives them. They are also a way of bringing nature into the house, which can be very relaxing and beneficial for mental and emotional health.
In summary, bonsai are an original and symbolic gift that can be offered to mothers on this very special occasion. Bonsai are a good way to show appreciation and gratitude to mothers and to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of nature at home.
