Japanese Maple bonsai care

Location: The Japanese maple is a bonsai that should be placed outdoors in a sunny and aerated location. In summer, it should be protected from direct sunlight and placed in a shady area so as not to burn its leaves. In winter, although it is frost resistant, it is advisable to protect the maple bonsai from temperatures below -10 °C.

Fertilisation: In spring and autumn. The use of solid organic fertilisers, such as Hiryo Gold, is a good choice for Acer bonsai. If you want a stronger growth, you can also add liquid fertiliser.

Pruning and pinching: Pruning of shoots and small branches can be done in the spring using the fingers, leaving the first two leaves. Branch pruning is done at the beginning of spring budding. The use of sealing pastes on Japanese maples is recommended for their antifungal function, as the Acers are vulnerable to certain diseases that can penetrate through wounds.

Soil and watering: Water abundantly during the vegetative period and especially on the warmest days of summer. For this reason, a very draining soil is recommended. You can add Sakadama, Akadama or Pomice to oxygenate and add drainage to your mix.
