The most remarkable feature of Prunus tomentosa is the dark reddish brown color of its bark, that cracks over time and desquamates in vertical strips.

Prunus tomentosa. Bonsai 8 years. Nanking Cherry. These are trees that, by nature, must be placed outside, ideal for balconies, gardens and terraces. The most remarkable feature of Prunus tomentosa is the dark reddish brown color of its bark, that cracks over time and desquamates in vertical strips. The leaves are alternate, oval, with serrated margins. In the under-part of the leaves are appearing hairs, giving them a more greyish colour.
Location: Outside in a Mediterranean climate the whole year and exposed to the sun but better place it in half-shadow during summer. It prefers full sun and grows naturally in a wide variety of soils. It is a variety very resistant to drought and cold.
Watering: It tolerates droughts well, however give it a moderate watering.
Curiosities: Known as Nanking cherry, Shanghai cherry or Korean cherry, among others, due to its Asian origin.
Dimensions in centimetres approx. (width x depth x height): 20 x 22 x 33 cm.

Substrate

Pruning
It is advisable to do it when the bonsai has no leaves. Usually two leaf buds are left. Leaf buds are thicker and oval than flower buds.
Pinching
Pinching can be done at any time of the year except during flowering season.
Wiring
The wiring should be done either in the spring or in the autumn. In spring if a large branch should be bent. In autumn there is still circulation of sap, small or secondary branches can be wired and positioned.
