Olea europaea sylvestris. Bonsai 10 years. Wild olive tree. It is a typical Mediterranean tree that lives better outdoors because it needs sun and cold to produce fruits. Evergreen tree of slow but steady growth.
Location: In a Mediterranean climate zone, outside, in full sun all year round. Outside its natural climatic zone, it is convenient to protect it from extreme cold and especially from frost (freezing temperatures for more than 24 hours). In spite of this, during the winter it needs a marked decrease in temperatures, between 5 and 7 ºC.
Watering: The olive tree has minimal water needs.
Curiosities: Traditionally considered the symbol of peace, the olive tree was also the emblem of victory and chastity. In ancient Rome, both the newlyweds and the dead wore olive crowns. It was the mark of the victorious warriors and the prize for the Olympic Games winners.
Today, at the UN headquarter, and thus throughout the world, the crown of olive branches symbolizes universal peace.
