Daruma. Japanese ceramic figurine. Black (9 cm). Daruma dolls are a symbol of good luck and fortune and are often offered as a gift.

The Daruma are figures without arms and legs that represent the founder of Zen: Bodhidharma. According to legend, the master Daruma lost his arms and legs after many years of meditating in a cave without using them. The Daruma has a face with a moustache, but his eyes are completely white and have no pupils. The Daruma's owner paints the pupil of the left eye when he sets his goal, and the right eye when he achieves it. When the doll has only one painted eye, it is usually placed where it is visible as a reminder.
